How to Create a Google Drive Direct Download Link (Step by Step)

Google Drive is one of the easiest ways to host files for free, but its share links have a catch: they open a preview page instead of downloading the file. For a download button on your website, an app update, a free e-book or an email attachment link, you usually want the file to start downloading immediately. This tutorial shows how to create a direct download link in seconds.

Step 1: Share the file publicly

A direct link only works if people are allowed to see the file.

1. In Google Drive, right-click the file and choose Share.
2. Under General access, change "Restricted" to Anyone with the link.
3. Keep the role as Viewer.
4. Click Copy link.

The link will look like this:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AbCdEfGhIjKlMnOpQrStUvWxYz/view?usp=sharing

The long code between /d/ and /view is the file ID.

Step 2: Convert it to a direct download link

Common problems and fixes

"You need access" or "Access denied" – the file is not shared publicly. Go back to Step 1.

"Google Drive can't scan this file for viruses" – Google shows this warning for files larger than about 100 MB. Visitors can click Download anyway. There is no way around this for large files; consider a different host for very large downloads.

"Download quota exceeded" – if a file is downloaded many times in a short period, Google temporarily limits it. Wait 24 hours, or make a copy of the file (which has a fresh quota) and share that.

Folder links do not work – Google does not provide direct links for folders. Zip the folder, upload the ZIP and share that file instead.
