How to Convert iPhone HEIC Photos to JPG (On Windows, Android or Any Device)

You transfer photos from your iPhone to a Windows laptop, try to upload them to a website, or send them to a friend with an Android phone, and suddenly nothing opens. The culprit is the HEIC format. This guide explains what HEIC is, why it causes problems, and how to convert HEIC photos to JPG in a few clicks.

What is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the file format Apple has used for iPhone and iPad photos since iOS 11. It is based on the HEIF standard and the HEVC video codec. Its big advantage is efficiency: a HEIC photo is roughly half the size of a JPG of the same quality, so your phone stores twice as many pictures.

The downside is compatibility. Many Windows programs, older Android devices, web browsers and a large number of online upload forms simply do not recognize HEIC files.

Stop your iPhone from creating HEIC files

If you regularly need JPG files, you can make your iPhone save photos in JPG directly:

1. Open Settings → Camera → Formats.
2. Choose Most Compatible.

New photos will be saved as JPG. The trade-off is that they take more storage. Alternatively, keep High Efficiency and let iOS convert automatically when sharing: go to Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC and choose Automatic.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality? Very slightly, because JPG uses a different compression. At 90% quality the difference is invisible for normal viewing.

Is the photo's date and location kept? Conversion creates a fresh image, so EXIF metadata like GPS location is removed. This is actually good for privacy when sharing photos online.

Can Windows open HEIC files? Windows 10 and 11 can with the "HEIF Image Extensions" from the Microsoft Store, but many apps and websites still cannot. Converting to JPG is the most reliable solution.
