How to Sign a PDF Online for Free (Draw, Type or Upload a Signature)

Printing a document just to sign it, then scanning it back, wastes time and paper, and the scanned result often looks crooked and grey. Electronic signing lets you sign PDFs in a minute on your computer or phone. This guide shows how to do it for free, without creating an account and without uploading your documents.

Three ways to create your signature

Open the Sign PDF tool and drop in your document. When you choose the Sign tool, a signature panel appears with three options:

1. Draw it

Use your mouse, trackpad, finger or stylus to draw your signature on the pad. On a phone or tablet, drawing with your finger usually gives the most natural result. You can choose the ink color; dark blue looks like a real pen signature.

2. Type it

Type your name and choose a handwriting style. This is quick and neat, and suitable for many informal agreements.

3. Upload an image

Sign your name on white paper, take a clear photo, and upload it. The tool uses the image as your signature. For the cleanest result, crop it tightly and make sure the background is plain white or transparent. You can remove a background with our background remover.

Place and adjust the signature

1. After clicking Use signature, click on the page where it should go.
2. Drag the signature to move it, and use the round handle to resize it.
3. Use the Text tool to add the date, your printed name or initials next to it.
4. Click Save & download PDF.

Your signature is merged into the PDF, and the original document content stays intact underneath.

Is an electronic signature legally valid?

In many countries, simple electronic signatures are legally recognized for most everyday agreements, such as rental forms, consent letters, internal approvals and many business contracts. Laws such as the US ESIGN Act, the EU eIDAS regulation and Pakistan's Electronic Transactions Ordinance recognize electronic signatures in principle.

However, some documents require a certified digital signature (with a cryptographic certificate) or a wet-ink signature, for example certain property, court or government documents. When in doubt, ask the organization requesting your signature.
