About the BMI Calculator

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening measure that compares your weight to your height. It is calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. The BMI Calculator works with both metric (kg and cm) and imperial (pounds, feet and inches) units and instantly shows your BMI, your weight category and a color-coded scale.

Standard adult categories from the World Health Organization are: Underweight below 18.5, Normal 18.5–24.9, Overweight 25–29.9 and Obese 30 or higher. The calculator also shows the healthy weight range for your height. Note that some health organizations suggest lower cut-offs for South Asian populations, where health risks can begin at a BMI of 23.

BMI is a general indicator and does not measure body fat directly or account for muscle mass, age, sex or ethnicity. It is not medical advice; consult a healthcare professional for a full assessment.

How to use the BMI Calculator

  1. Choose metric or imperial units.
  2. Enter your weight and height.
  3. Read your BMI value and category.
  4. Check the healthy weight range for your height.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy BMI?

For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a healthy weight.

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

Not always. Muscular people can have a high BMI without excess fat, because BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat.

Can children use this calculator?

No. Children and teens need age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles, so please consult a pediatric growth chart.
