About the Speech to Text
The Speech to Text tool lets you type with your voice. Click Start dictation, speak naturally, and your words appear in the text box in real time. It is a fast way to write emails, notes, essays, social media posts and messages, and it is a great accessibility aid for anyone who finds typing difficult.
It supports many languages, including English, Urdu, Hindi, Arabic, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Indonesian, Turkish, Bengali and Punjabi. Say "period" or "comma" in English to add punctuation in many browsers. The tool uses the speech recognition service built into your browser (Chrome, Edge and Safari), which requires an internet connection; your browser vendor processes the audio according to its privacy policy.
How to use the Speech to Text
- Choose your language.
- Click Start dictation and allow microphone access.
- Speak clearly; your words appear as you talk.
- Click Stop, then copy or download your text.
Frequently asked questions
Which browsers support speech to text?
Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Safari support voice dictation. Firefox does not currently support the Web Speech recognition API.
Does it work offline?
Usually not. Browsers send the audio to their own speech recognition service to convert it to text.
How accurate is it?
Accuracy is high for clear speech in a quiet room. Speak at a normal pace and use a good microphone for best results.
